Doom64EX Classic Guide

Requirements

  • You will need a legally owned Doom 64 N64 ROM in .z64 format.
  • You will also need the Windows release, as it includes WadGen.exe:
https://github.com/caorthann-celt/Doom64EX-SDL2/releases/tag/v2.6
  • Only the USA doom.z64 ROM has been tested. Other ROM versions may work, but have not been checked.

Generate the Base Files

  • Unzip the Windows release folder.
  • Double click WadGen.exe.
  • Select your legally owned Doom 64 N64 .z64 ROM in the file explorer.
  • Run the conversion.
  • If it errors, try running it again.

Once successful, WadGen.exe will create:

DOOM64.WAD
DOOMSND.SF2

Internal Storage Setup

  • Launch the Xbox app once.
  • Close the app.
  • This creates the app's LocalState folder.
  • Open the Xbox Device Portal file browser.
  • Place both generated files here:
Doom64ex/LocalState/

The folder should contain:

Doom64ex/LocalState/DOOM64.WAD
Doom64ex/LocalState/DOOMSND.SF2

External Storage Setup

  • Create the following folder on your external drive:
E:/doom64ex/
  • Place both generated files in that folder.

The folder should contain:

E:/doom64ex/DOOM64.WAD
E:/doom64ex/DOOMSND.SF2

Custom WAD Setup

Custom WADs can be placed in either of these folders:

LocalState/wads/
E:/doom64ex/wads/
  • Choose Custom WAD from the launcher.
  • The left list shows every WAD found in both locations.
  • Press A to add a WAD to the load order on the right.
  • Press X to remove a WAD from the load order.
  • Press Menu to start the game with the selected load order.

For multiple WADs, add them in the order you want them loaded.

To move a selected WAD through the load order:

  • Hold View.
  • Press D-pad Up or D-pad Down.
