Doom64EX Classic Guide
Requirements
- You will need a legally owned Doom 64 N64 ROM in
.z64format. - You will also need the Windows release, as it includes
WadGen.exe:

- Only the USA
doom.z64ROM has been tested. Other ROM versions may work, but have not been checked.
Generate the Base Files
- Unzip the Windows release folder.
- Double click
WadGen.exe. - Select your legally owned Doom 64 N64
.z64ROM in the file explorer. - Run the conversion.
- If it errors, try running it again.
Once successful, WadGen.exe will create:
DOOM64.WAD
DOOMSND.SF2
Internal Storage Setup
- Launch the Xbox app once.
- Close the app.
- This creates the app's LocalState folder.
- Open the Xbox Device Portal file browser.
- Place both generated files here:
Doom64ex/LocalState/
The folder should contain:
Doom64ex/LocalState/DOOM64.WAD
Doom64ex/LocalState/DOOMSND.SF2
External Storage Setup
- Create the following folder on your external drive:
E:/doom64ex/
- Place both generated files in that folder.
The folder should contain:
E:/doom64ex/DOOM64.WAD
E:/doom64ex/DOOMSND.SF2
Custom WAD Setup
Custom WADs can be placed in either of these folders:
LocalState/wads/
E:/doom64ex/wads/
- Choose Custom WAD from the launcher.
- The left list shows every WAD found in both locations.
- Press A to add a WAD to the load order on the right.
- Press X to remove a WAD from the load order.
- Press Menu to start the game with the selected load order.
For multiple WADs, add them in the order you want them loaded.
To move a selected WAD through the load order:
- Hold View.
- Press D-pad Up or D-pad Down.

Control Settings
Everything can be changed in:
Options > Controls > Bindings > Gamepad
This page also includes separate Right Stick X and Right Stick Y sensitivity sliders, vertical look, and invert look.
The left stick is analogue:
- a light push walks
- a full push runs
Autorun is mainly useful for the D-pad if you choose to change the movement binds.
Useful Settings
- Change the resolution in Options > Video.
- To remove the mouse cursor in the top-left corner, go to Options > Setup and turn Show Cursor off.
- Leave the frame rate set to Capped.
- Smooth currently causes problems and is best avoided.
Saves and Settings
Saves and settings stay in LocalState.
